Sometimes we just want to disconnect, right? We've had a busy day, or a busy several days. We're tired. We just want a little down time. And when we don't get it, we can get more than a little grumpy. What do we do when, despite our desires, we're called to do more, to help others when we feel like our resources are all depleted, when an aging relative, or a sick kid, or someone else needs help and we're all that there is to provide that help? We might remember what Jesus does in today's Gospel (Mk 7: 24-30). He goes to Tyre, a town on the Mediterranean Sea in what is now Lebanon. It was not a Jewish town and Jesus presumably thought He might get some rest there. Mark tells us that Jesus "entered a house and wanted no one to know about it." Point one-- Jesus, the Son of God, the Divine One, gets tired. He knows He needs rest, and He does what He can to achieve it. He goes into a house hoping no one will know He is there. We might remember that. We can need rest too, and it isn't a sign of weakness, or a moral failing, to "go into a house and want no one to know about it." That's what Jesus did, after all. Point two-- when someone really needs our help, as did the woman in today's Gospel, we'll have the strength to help. God will give us what we need, as was the case with Jesus. His initial reaction was to say that His help was for the children of Israel, but when the woman pushed Him on that point, He realized that He needed to do something, and He did-- tired as he was. The woman's child was healed. Have confidence-- trust the Lord. Tired as we may be some days; filled as we may be with the need to get away and rest, the Lord will provide what we need when we need it to do God's work. That's what happens in today's gospel.
