We're all so busy, we say to ourselves. So many things to do. Work, kids, family life, a house to maintain, bills to pay, aging relatives for whom we must care-- the list goes on. We don't have time to spend with Jesus, but it's not our fault, we tell ourselves. There's just no time.
There really is nothing new under the sun, right? I say that because we see the same kind of complaint in today's Gospel (Lk 10: 38-42) where Martha complains that she has too much to do to listen to Jesus. She is "burdened with much serving," Luke tells us, while Mary is sitting at Jesus' feet and listening to Him.
Jesus listens to Martha's complaint and then tells her: "Mary has chosen the better part." It is a choice, He is saying. You can choose to be all concerned with making everything right for everyone, which often seems like an exercise of ego ("see how nice my place is and how good my food is," we're saying), or you can be concerned with listening to and following Jesus.
Take your pick. Jesus tells us which choice is the better one. "Mary has chosen the better part," He says.
Sure, you can say you're only serving others, and that it is important to show hospitality. All true. But is that what we're really doing? Or is it all about us and our feeling good about ourselves and our abilities?
Pay attention to your busyness. If you're too busy to listen to Jesus, like Martha, I'll bet there are things you could cut out that would free some time to sit at Jesus' feet.
You'll be glad you did.
