I don't think I've talked to a single person in the last 24 hours who isn't sick to death of the winter weather-- cold, snow, cloudy-- and seemingly-unending. Even the groundhog did not have good news for us this year. Folks walk around in heavy coats with that hunched-over look trying to conserve body heat. The phrase "bleak mid-winter" comes to mind.
But there's one exception to what I just wrote: a guy whose name is Arthur, I believe. Arthur is a fixture in the downtown skyway just inside LaSalle Court, across from Macy's. He was there this morning, helping the folks at the walk-in massage place called, appropriately, "Ooh Aaaah," put out their signs.
Arthur mostly sits on a small chair, with a box at his feet for money, and greets everyone who walks by as they hurry to work. No big deal, I suppose, but his greeting is full of Christian evangelism. He sings Gospel songs, with a sweet voice, when he isn't talking to people. His "have a great day" is said like he really means it. He reminds passers-by that "Jesus loves you." He tells folks "We can do this-- we can do Wednesday."
Folks who hear him seem to have a bit lighter step, a slightly-less-pronounced hunch in their back. They smile.
In the middle of a winter that has been "challenging," shall we say, he is a reminder of the warnth of God's love. I often think how great it would be if we could all greet each other with the kind of genuine warmth and love Arthur expresses. Sure would make a difference on a cold day like today.
You might give it a try.
